Those Thoughts Caught in all the patterns we create Running from the lies inside your head Scared of all the things that never come Live a life of fear and then it's gone Remembering a day, When you were not afraid, Can't seem to find your way back there again Oh but please don't say, your hope is gone You don't have to be, who you've become When you could be anything, oh my god Please just don't give into them Into those thoughts Thoughts that tell you baby you're no good Doubts that stop you trying when you should Worry kept your life stuck on a shelf Urges make you want to hurt yourself Don't listen they're not true Your brain's fucking with you I don't know why I'd tell you if I knew Oh but please don't say, your hope is gone You don't have to be, who you've become When you could be anything, oh my god Please just don't give into them Into those thoughts When you could be anything, oh my god Please just don't give into them, you gotta fight them off Yeah you could be anything, oh my god Please just don't give into them Into those thoughts

Who Do You Trust? Who do you trust? Is it the man in the hot-seat? Quotes in the paper Telling you all you need to know about why your country's going to war. Who do you trust? Is it a face on the TV? Talking about heartbreak Can you tell me that you know them well and can you say for sure they got nothing to sell? Who do you trust? Is it the teacher in the classroom? Talki about history Well how do you know that what they say is true or is it simply just a point of view? Who do you trust these days? It's getting harder and harder to tell They don't care who you are, they just got something to sell Who do you trust? Is it a man who gets you high? Saying his shit's so fine Well how can you think for yourself if your mind is gone it's off the shelf Who do you trust? Is it the face in the bathroom? Smiling back at you Well don't you know that they got there first and you're not your own man can it get worse now? Who do you trust these days? It's getting harder and harder to tell They don't care who you are, they just got something to sell Who do you trust? Can you hear the earth crying? For a profit she's dying. You know the man's gonna tell you everything is fine, so long as you keep him in shirts and ties and souls. Cause that's what he buys Who do you trust? Is it a guy who just writes songs? Well maybe he's all wrong Yeah and maybe UFOs are true with the loch ness monster and santa too! Who do you trust? Is it the people yelling truth? Although they ain't got no proof Conspiracy theories don't help me much, you need cold hard facts for the flames to touch now Who do you trust these days? It's getting harder and harder to tell They don't care who you are, they just got something to sell I said, who do you trust these days you know the bad one's are starting to smell They don't care who you are, they just got something to sell Who do you trust...?

Sirens Call Fishing for a soul, on a boat far from the shore I heard a sirens call on the radio No land that I can see, the further I go the more I seek Sailing through a million stars to find the one I need I'm a storm away, Arctic seas I have to brave Take a chance against the wind, maybe you could rescue me? Cause I'm lost, but I'm casting out a net Sirens call, were you just inside my head If I don't find you, I hope my friends will understand Why I've gone Now I'm rolling, on the ocean Wish I could tell you all the strangest things I've seen Not heaven, somewhere in between I'm a storm away, restless seas I have to brave Take a chance on everything, maybe I could rescue you? Yes I'm lost, but I'm casting out a net Sirens call, was it just inside my head? If I don't get back, I hope back home they'll understand Cause I'm all worn out, and the waves crash across my bow Fighting doubt, just to keep on going now I'll fight it all the way Yes I'm lost, but I'm casting out a net Sirens call, forever playing in my head If I don’t get back, I hope they all will understand That I’m lost, but I’m casting out a net Sirens call, oh I swear I’ll find you yet If I don’t get back, hope I believe it at the end Why I've gone And risked it all I'm praying that you rescue me I know that I could rescue you

Get Out Of Your Head Getting stuck, ‘cause you focus way too much, on how it’s gotta be Stuck in the mud of a mind that beats you up, if you don’t succeed See them peacock in their summer clothes Their life’s a movie and they’re all heroes in it The things that you want, they’re all slipping out of view ‘Cause you’re too afraid, to put out a hand, just in case they laugh at you Oh, just get out of your head You’re gonna scare yourself to death What the hell did you expect? When you’re so hard with yourself Life is tough when you care too much because, we’re just the butt of a joke A freaky chance of the cosmic dance so just say fuck it lets get on with the show We all just woke up on this little rock Nobody asked us so it’s not our fault, is it? The things that you want, let them come now if they choose And don’t be afraid, to push them away, if they start to torment you Oh, just get out of your head You’ve got a life to live instead When the hell’s it gonna end Man, you’re too hard with yourself You might even start to have some fun Take the pressure off and loosen up, you’ll see The things that you need, they’re all right in front of you And you just got caught, up in it all, like we always seem to do Oh just get out of your head You’re too hard with yourself You could try to be a friend A friend to yourself And get out of this hell Sometimes I feel like letting go, because The climb is hard, and I, just don’t seem to move at all But when I look down, at where I started from Well I’ve, climbed so high I can almost touch the sky

Let It Go Blaming yourself, brooding over why it all went wrong, and what you should have done Taking offense, they put you down and now your pride is hurt, it’s really eating you up Don’t waste your time and energy no good thing will come You gotta let it go, lay your weapons down, make peace and go home You gotta let it go, the anger you feel now, means they’ve already won You gotta let it go You grew up together, something changed and now they never call, wish it could be how it was You had a lover, but they cheated on ya now your heart is broken, never gonna trust no more Wake up, life’s too short for getting stuck, you have to move on And just gotta let it go, you know that if you don’t you’re gonna sink like a stone You gotta let it go, even if you’re right it don’t matter no more You gotta let it go My heart aches, it’s all getting more than I can take Yes, you can scream and roar, but it ain’t gonna help at all, So breathe out and just let it go Everything could change again tomorrow You gotta let it go, open up your heart and good things will follow You gotta let it go You can’t change what has been Just let go and you can be free you know Anytime you want You could just let it go (repeat)

Night Terrors It’s quarter past three, I can’t get to sleep Here come those old night terrors now Smiling at me, flashing their teeth Drawn in by the smell of fear I’ve nowhere to run, I wait as they come Searching with blindly groping feet I reach for my gun but the bottle is done As they settle down to feed That’s when you wake When you smile and you say My love There’s no one here but us You and I we have what it takes For the darkest nights and the longest days Our love will shelter us Cause that’s what it does Oh now can you feel your heart pounding hard? How do we deal with these dark racing thoughts? How can we ever rest when it never stops no it never stops? It’s alright, that’s what you say All these phantoms will just fade away You just need a little trust You and I we have what it takes You got my love and it’s here to stay It’s watching over us Cause that’s what it does You can rest now cause your safe Say goodbye now to those old hard days Let the nightmares all just fade away This world was meant for us You and I we have what it takes For the darkest night and the longest day Our love will shelter us Cause that’s what it does

Face It Alone Under these skies, I feel so small Like I’m almost nothing at all All of these questions, on all of these doors Worn a hole in my head with these thoughts It’s like we’re always just go Running in circles, digging up holes Trying to forget what we don’t wanna know Tell me, you know, what it’s like And at least I know I won’t face it… Alone, I fall And I’m fractured, I’m broken Like our outraged hearts We’re all fragments desperate to be whole Just want to be happy, like everyone else But you can’t seem to get past yourself Some things are broken, and can be repaired But some problems can only be shared Still we’re always just go Running round backwards, filling in holes Trying to pretend that we don’t care at all Tell me, you know, what it’s like And at least I know, I don’t face it alone Tell you, I get scared and uptight And at least you know, you won’t face it.. Alone, I fall And I’m fractured, I’m broken Like our outraged hearts We’re all fragments desperate to be whole Don't you know by now? We're all sinking on the same boat. And when at last this ship goes down. If we hold each others head up we won't drown. We won't make it alone.
8.
Never Gonna Let you Go If I go before you, then I'll come back to haunt you Cause even in death I'll still need you, still want you I'll be waiting in the darkness, can you see me, can you feel me? Cause I'm right here beside you and it's still, yeah it's still me And I just can't let you go, no I'll never let you go Forever was what you said, my love is stronger than death And I just can't let you go, no I'll never let you go Don't move on, don't move on, I'll be watching and waiting And don't bring home another, cause I'll be screaming and hating And I just can't let you go, no I'll never let you go, Forever was what you said, my love is stronger than death, I just can't let you go, no I'll never let you go She said, love's gone She said, move on She's so, headstrong She said, so long But what about me? And I just can't let you go, no I'll never let you go Forever was what you said, my love is stronger than death, I just can't let you go, no I'll never let you go
9.
What Are We Waiting For? I don't even know your name, but I think that we're the same Something's missing that I could replace You raise a smile but it's no disguise, cause you're not smiling with your eyes, someone, stole your smile away And like an apple without a core, just like me Once you were whole but not anymore, we could be Maybe this could be something now, if you never swim then you'll never drown, but the only thing that's worth going down for is love, so what are we waiting for? Oh I'm not saying this will turn out right, all I'm saying is that it just might, broken hearts, need to hope or they'll just die But there's life in us two yet, and yeah maybe We're a little bruised but we can mend, you could save me (Hold on to hope keep your love alive, it's all over when that fire dies) Maybe this could be something now, if you never swim then you'll never drown, but the only thing that's worth going down for is love, so what are we waiting for? What are you frightened of? We've both been burned, but this could be our turn And if we get knocked down, at least we're standing up right now.
10.
It's Easy For You Late night, soft light Hold you, go soon Can't be too late She said it's easy for you, to crawl back, to fall back into So easy, for you, cause you've got that but how do I get through? Hells place, lost days Poor lies, soft cries Where do we go? She said it's easy for you, to crawl back, to fall back into So easy, for you, cause you've got that but how do I get through? Knowing where you go to Where I can’t call you if I need to ‘Cause I’m just someone you’re on loan to, oh oh I’m on fire, I’m on fire, I’m on fire Oh, oh, oh, I’m on fire, for you

about

About This Album

Night Terrors is the first full length album from Sydney Singer/Songwriter Wires (Ed McGuire)

Although sticking largely to the indie pop, guitar-lashed sound of previous EPs, Bad Signs and Short Term Pleasures, this album also introduces new sonic flavours and in tone is a somewhat more reflective piece.

Ed has always turned to music to find his centre and with many of the songs on this album he found himself writing post-it-notes to himself on how to deal with some particularly restless mental demons.

“Art normally tends to be a cathartic experience,” Ed says, “You wrestle with certain things and, as a musician, attempt to trap them in the genie bottle of a song”.

This is most notable in songs like, Those Thoughts, about repetitive negative thinking, Get Out Of Your Head, about the dangers of too much introspection and losing perspective, and Face It Alone, which reminds us that a problem shared, is a problem halved. The song ends with the unnerving reminder: we won’t make it, alone.

“This album was also much more of a solo project that previous efforts, and took way, way longer!” Ed reflects. “I decided to rent a production room above this fantastic analogue studio in Camperdown in Sydney, called Free Energy Device. There is a really great community spirit there and the studio owner Richie Belkner is not only a lovely guy, but also super talented. He ended up engineering and mixing just over half of the songs on the record.”

Several members of the Wires line-up that had recorded the previous EP, Bad Signs, had moved away from Sydney and so this time Ed relied much more on session musicians to bring his vision for the album to life. It was also an opportunity to self-produce. The new studio space afforded time to experiment with new sounds, such as synths and electronica, as well as introducing lavish string arrangements to tracks such as Let It Go and Face It Alone, with players guesting from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

“I struggled to finish this album, to be honest. It was such a labour of love but also a chance to close the door on a certain chapter in my life. I guess maybe I wasn’t quite ready to close that door.”

Many of the songs on this album had been written, in one form or another, when Ed was signed to Albert Music in Sydney. That whole experience had been a series of record industry clichés ultimately ending in disappointment (Eds original album, recorded with Alberts, was never released). At which point, Ed stepped away from music for a period and went travelling, with his now wife, Claudia.

“I almost gave up. I really needed some time out, to remember why I did all of this in the first place.” Ed says, “This album was a chance to recapture what I love most about writing and recording music. And that’s the way it makes me feel. That’s always been the hook for me. There’s nothing else quite like it. I hope that comes across in this album”

Ed still lives in Sydney, Australia with his wife Claudia and baby daughter, Sophie Mia.
