"Bad Signs" is the second EP from Wires, featuring five new snarling indie guitar pop anthems about reluctant hearts, the boarded-up corners of the human soul and the five-seconds-to-midnight outlook for the human race.
With legendary Australian producer, Paul McKercher (You Am I, Augie March, Andy Bull) at the helm, the band eschewed more modern recording techniques by rehearsing like crazy and tracking the songs live through a vintage Neve 80 series desk at Oceanic Studios in Sydney.
Dave Grohl would have nodded sagely in approval.
"In the current age of laptop producers and auto-tuned pop stars, there's a danger that the performance aspect of recorded music is being lost. We grew up listening to great indie guitar bands, guys who could really play. They're our biggest influence and we wanted to be true to that heritage" explains lead singer and main songwriter, Ed McGuire.
"Theme wise, it's an EP largely about fear", says Ed, "About how it can creep into every aspect of your life, if you let it, and start to take over. Fear of letting go, fear of being hurt, fear of not being good enough, fear of the future. The first, and best way to tackle fear though, is to recognise it's there. To name it. That's what this EP was about for me, letting the light in on those particular demons, and letting them go."
Release should be a cathartic and euphoric experience, however, and ultimately, that's what this EP sounds like: five little victories.
